Erläuterung:
Die Trendpfeile geben an, ob ein Team sich in der zurückliegenden Woche relativ verbessert oder verschlechtert hat. Zu jedem Team sind zudem die Gesamtbilanz aller Pflichtspiele der Saison und der nächste Gegner aufgeführt, dazu eine Prognose über den erwarteten Ausgang des nächsten Spieles, sofern dies gegen einen gerankten Gegner gespielt wird.
Das Ranking basiert auf dem Ausgang der Pflichtspiele gerankter Teams untereinander. Ignoriert werden also in der NFL Preseason-Spiele, im NCAA-Bereich Partien von FBS-Teams gegen FCS-Teams, bei der GFL oder nationalen Rankings Spiele in internationalen Wettbewerben etc. - unabhängig davon sind jedoch alle Pflichtspiele in der Gesamtbilanz enthalten. Bei Mannschaften, die in der Saison erst fünf oder weniger Spiele gegen andere gerankte Teams ausgetragen haben, beruht die Einschätzung zum Teil auf dem Abschluss-Ranking der letzten Saison.
Ziel ist es, den derzeitigen Leistungsstand der Teams widerzuspiegeln. In die Erstellung fließt daher neben der Spielstärke der Gegner und den Leistungen der Teams in den Spielen eine zeitliche Gewichtung ein. Anders also als beispielsweise bei den in der NCAA verwendeten Computer-Ranglisten oder Abstimmungen wird nicht angestrebt, eine "politisch korrekte" Aussage über das durchschnittliche Abschneiden während der gesamten Saison zu treffen, auch spielen historisch bedingte Vorlieben keine Rolle.
Die Fokussierung der football-aktuell Rankings auf die augenblickliche Leistungsfähigkeit erlaubt daher auch die Prognose einer Siegwahrscheinlichkeit für das kommende Spiel jeder Mannschaft. Wie alle Prognosen ist diese natürlich ohne jede Gewähr. Insbesondere ist zu berücksichtigen, dass entscheidende Veränderungen im Kader im Vergleich zu den vorherigen, in die Wertung eingeflossenen Spielen naturgemäß nicht berücksichtigt sind, ebensowenig wie besondere Rivalitäten unter den Teams. Aus Gründen der Übersichtlichkeit sind die für die Siegwahrscheinlichkeit angegebenen Prozentzahlen auf volle Zahlen gerundet und ignorieren die Möglichkeit eines Unentschiedens. Werte über 50 Prozent kennzeichnen so den Favoriten des Spieles, Werte unter 50 den Underdog.
